One problem with rolling your own mesh format: you have no way to visualize your own mesh format outside of loading it in-game. So I spent a brief amount of time making a mesh visualizer utility with modes for graphics, physics, and "anchors" which are attachment points on a mesh for child objects or other utilities. In this case, the player's ship has anchors for missile, gun, cockpit, and exhaust positions.
